Randomly Banned?

Why am I suddenly banned from AO2's TS server and a few TDM servers? I have NEVER used hacks, so I can't possibly be on the UAA banlist.

I had the same problem with the Infinity server (a couple times), Wolycan had to delete his server's banlist in order for me to join. Also, I was banned from the server wtf.ca.us.urtpug.com until TSD fixed the problem (it wouldnt stay fixed, he did it like 5 times). -> I recall J0E also had the same issue with the server.

Mousepod and Woly both said that my ip wasn't even in the server's banlist. ???

Has anybody else encountered this?

I made a post on the UAA website, I'm sure they'll remove the ban soon.

I asked Bean to look into this.

Basically its a problem with the way ioUrT handles range bans.

Some Canadian hacker with the ip x.x.0.x got demoed and banned, and since ioq3 being what it is, it bans a whole load more ips than it really needs to. It would be nice if you could do range bans using a .* or some other character, in 4.2 to avoid this problem.

At least UrT 4.1 can ban a few more IPs than 4.0 could.  Before the complaint was UrT wouldn't ban.  Now the complaint is it bans too many...  Pffft...  You can only make some of the people happy some of the time..

5.12.09 is a class C subnet ban and it appears to be Brisbane, Australia, not Canada.

lol @ adding a /16 (65,536 IPs) for 1 hacker. That's funny stuff. This is the first time I really check out the list.... they normally ban the full /24 when a hacker is found?

So every time a hacker is found 255 IPs get banned with it?

There's about 1500 /24s banned... total of 382,000 innocent IPs plus the 65,535 for the /16.

Is this right or am I looking at something wrong? Are there really ~ 450,000 IPs banned by UAA incorrectly?

When you start to think about how many of those ranges are probably the same person.. it gets pretty sad. It's probably like 1500 IPs per hacker found I bet.

that is really sad. :(
so its good to know that passport is coming and UAA can delete this IP bans and replace it with real account bans when passport fails.

I came across this (but haven't tried it myself): http://sourceforge.n...s/urt41banguid/

That could be a good start to what you need. Since it's guid based I'm thinking it wouldn't be too hard to add a rule for the consecutive GUIDs.

I don't know much about it... but I'm assuming that it saves the banlist in either a file or some sort of database. If that's the case it could be shared. I wasn't necessarily saying it should be used instead of UAA, just that is might help the OP. If the lists were able to be shared, it would make for a nice addition to UAA or for another organization.

Banning GUID would actually be effective in certain situation for a particular cheat that sets the GUID. But than it's also very easy to change it again, rendering it ineffective again.

The players GUID is a hash of the clients 2048 character random id (q3key) and the servers IP:PORT. Obviously you can't run all your servers on the same ip and port.
