They basically say it's mods' job if a zoom circle looks like an ellipse.

That is a known issue:
Huds aren’t altered by the engine for aspect ratios, this is up to the authors of modifications to fix themselves. So if you see a sniper scope that on-zoom appears as an ellipse instead of a circle, this is why.

I play UrT @ 800x600 from my laptop connected to a 4:3 Crt monitor so it works for me.
but when UrT fix that for widescreen it doesn't fit the 4:3 ratio any more.
I think they could do that with a scope hud but at the end you have a small circle with allot of black around.

If it was a circle, wide screen would be at a disadvantage when sniping since you don't get any horizontal view increases from running at <4:3.
