If a league/tourny were to be made, would you/your team enter it if:

Entry Fee: $5 per player ($25 per team)
Team amount: 32
First Prize: $500
Second Prize: $200
Third Prize: $100

???

Personally wouldn't enter, only got two members, but the pricing seems fair. Though I'm somewhat older (got cash $$), not sure if the youngsters are willing to cough up the dough :)

Nope. I consider Urban Terror a great game to play for fun, and for fun only. Having a fee and money prize discourages not skilled players for participating and enjoying the tournament (and perhaps learn a couple of things during the league). Besides, not every clan is created for the purpose of being "the First" or "the Best" and thus recruiting people based on their skills are not their intention.

Though i admit that the fee is low 8-)

One reason why this wouldn't work in the EU, there would only be 4 or 5 clans that would have a reasonable chance of winning. What would be the motivation for the other 28 clans to join? Sorry i can't see it happening. Also people would form teams with the best players.

no no no, I'll tell you why it won't happen.

'cause people don't want to pay.

and someone else will let them league without pay.

it's like the passport system for pubs. It won't work if people can play elsewhere.

I wouldn't. I think it would only attract cheaters. And more important issue when deciding to join a league is, is it a quality run league? Having prizes or not doesn't indicate if the league is a quality run league, so, the prizes would not attract me, but knowing that the league was run by reputable people and had good support of the community would.

Entry fee is too low (remember, splitting at least 5 ways for a 5 man team) and there aren't enough teams in "skill brackets" for it to really be feasible. You have maybe 3 clans in North America right now that could win under good circumstances (like if 1 or 2 starters didn't show for the opponent). Europe maybe has 4 or 5 like 7o9 said. So if you have 20 teams, 17 have practically zero chance of winning any money. You'd want divisions, like A, B, C, etc., and then you have too few teams in each division so more than half win money (which means lower prizes or much higher entrance fees; though $5 is too low regardless).

It's not a bad idea at all, and I'm surprised it's never been brought up before, but unfortunately this community is too small for it to attract enough people willing to pony up $20 usd each or something. Plus as everyone else said, cheating, badly run, whiny bitches, etc.

it's a poker game. ok, i get it. you get 5 pals and put their money on the table, winner gets it all. but you need trustworthy friends to do it. and if someone known he'll lose, the incentive is lower.

it may require lucky games 'hey, i may win if i sucked 10 times in a row before it doesn't matter'.

Well knowing that the league is run by somebody who know what he's doing is good but you must remember that it depends a lot on people who are actually partecipating.

If I'm running a league I can't really assure that every match is gonna be played and every team is going to show up for it. I can't do anything more than putting up a rule for forfait if a team doesn't show up...

Also I was surprised to know that leagues are a lot "homemade". By that I mean that teams have to agree to a time and date and also they have to agree on a server to play on. That leaves a very small control on them.

Sure there are demos, screenshots and rules but the quality of a league also relies on the clans that are actually partecipating, imho.

----------

However, back on topic.
This is a good topic for me as I was thinking about something like this for Daily 'Nade but also I think your formula wouldn't work.
I have a good experience in game industry and for what I saw the success of events and tournaments relies a lot on the company that is producing the game. For example at the latest "YuGi-Oh" nationals (Don't worry I don't play that fraking thing) there where prices for everyone (small prices, even for the last guy), side events with interesting prices, gadgets, bonus stuff and a lot of other things going on.
Creating a Modern Warfare 2 event would be easier as you could give away posters, mousepads, gadgets, steam stuff, hardware and so on.

Having a sponsor is a must.

In our case is different since the Company that produces the game has no money (like us). A successful event is an event where the guy that begun yesterday can get back to his home with his hands full of prices and with a lot of fun and the pro player can get home with his hands full of prices and with a lot of fun.

IDK if I explained it well but that's the point. Everybody should have fun, everybody should get something (a lot for the first prize and gadgets or other stuff for the last guy).

Also paying a registration fee and then facing [51] in the first match is just upsetting for a newbie clan.

There could be some sort of a world ranking system (idk if passport has gonna have that) that updates every time a clan war (even frendly) is made. This could going on for the majority of the season and then at the end of the season you could build up gropus from that (like a top tier group with the first 10 clans, a mid tier group with the next 10 clans and so on) and let them compete.

That way you could have 4 or 5 groups with a similar level of skill and give prizes to everybody that gets first, second or third in their group. Then at the end of the group "finals" the ranking resets to 0.

This could be interesting but again you should give away a lot of prizes.. not to mention that an average team is about 7 players (5 players + 2 subs) and you should give interesting prices to everyone of them (giving 10 bucks each is just ridicolous).

I hope that in the future we could build something like this.

Yeah you need experienced and responsible clans to have a good league experience. But, even if you have 20 good teams who know what they are doing, if they are in a crappy league run by someone who doesn't know what they are doing, it won't be good.
