A year and a half ago I embarked on a mission to create my first map for Urban Terror (which was the original ut4_icyjumps).  I learned how to do mapping on Linux rather than on Windows.  Actually, I learned some very basic mapping skills using Wily Duck's mapmaker package on Windows, then I transferred that knowledge onto Linux.  It took me quite some time to develop the optimum techniques for mapping on Linux.  Now, I would feel very clumsy if I tried mapping using Windows.

So, I decided to brain-dump my knowledge of mapping on Linux for Urban Terror.  I was going to write this tutorial a long time ago (a year ago), but now that I just installed a new operating system (Debian Lenny 5.0) onto both of my desktop computers at home, I actually had the chance to reinstall all of my mapping tools on both computers.  So, I wrote the HOW-TO, then I tested it.  :-)

I hope you Linux people out there will benefit from this, even if you are not using Debian.  Linux is a superb platform to be doing mapping on.

Nice guide, but im not sure telling people to use the hollow tool is a good idea.  When i started out i was informed it was better to create six seperate brushes, and i discovered this to be a much better way of doing things with time.

Beyond thats its nice.

You are correct about the "hollow" feature.
I never use it myself and I don't advise others to use it.
However I used it in the tutorial in order to keep the instructions and simple and short as possible.
Thanks for the compliments btw.

Very cool. I'm probably getting a new computer this fall, I think I'll do a similar guide for windows (to improve on my previous guide which isn't as nice as yours)

Its a lazy way to do stuff, its almost as bad as CSG subtraction.

The main issue is it overlaps the brushes which when done a lot can generate certain errors, and screw up compiles.

Mh, okay, and what is wrong with the CSG substract tool ? :-D
Anyway, I think it wouldn't be too hard to create a plugin (or simply change the code) and suppress these overlapping brushes.

Do you guys think it would make sense to add a link to my tutorial somewhere in one of the sticky threads with level design links?
